STRESSAlthough an unavoidable part of life, your response to it directly effects to the degree to which it affects your body. What IS stress? Stress refers to any reaction to a physical, mental, or emotional stimulus that upsets the body's natural balance. Sources like pressures at work, problems with loved ones, financial difficulties, and getting ready for the holidays are obvious, but everyday encounters such as encounters with crowds, noise, pain, extreme temperatures, and even sought after events like pregnancy or child adoption can be stressful as well. And of course, overwork; lack of sleep, physical illness, alcohol and drug use, and smoking put stress on the body.
Some people can handle their stress well, while most people begin to experience negative effects like fatigue, headaches, irratability, memory loss, teeth grinding, shallow breathing, lowered sexual drive, insomnia, gastrointestinal disorders and all out panic attacks. Stress can be an excellent breeding grown for all kinds of illness including cardiovascular disease, metabolic and skin disorders, cancer and autoimmune disease, and the most common adult ailment in North America -back pain.
Although stress begins as a mental or emotional problem, it has very real physical effects. The body response to stress with a series of physiological changes that include an increase level of adrenaline, elevation of blood pressure, acceleration of heat beat and tightening of the muscles. Almost all body functions and organs of their body react to stress. The pituitary gland increases its production of ACTH which in turn stimulates the release of the hormones cortisone and cortisol. These have the effect of inhibiting the functioning of disease fighting white blood cells and suppressing the immune response. This is what is responsible for most of the negative symptoms related to stress. With prolonged or recurrent stress, the body can become deficient in certain nutrients, and also unable to replace them adequately due to poor absorption. Long term stress is particularly dangerous because it wears out the body, and because of it's effect on the immune response, stress increases susceptibility to illness and slows down the healing process.
Women are far more susceptible to the negative effects of stress. One reason is that they tend to be more sensitive to their feelings, but another reason is that they usually have more roles than men, and thus have more things to be stressed about. They also seen to be more sensitive to all that is going on around them and feel more stressed about personal relationships, theirs or others.

I'd also like to share with you 2 STRESS BUSTING machines that are available today. The CHI MACHINE and the ELECTRO REFLEX ENERGIZER, distributed by the Hsin Ten International (H T E ). The Chi machine is a passive aerobic exerciser, and is marketed as a therapeutic massager- class 2 medical device by the FDA . Five minutes on the Chi Machine has been show to oxygenate the body equivalent to a 15-minute walk. This is especially wonderful for those that are bedridden or not able to exercise due to a physical condition or just bad weather. The stress relieving effects of the Chi machine are remarkable ! From my own experience, I can feel stress just melt away in a matter of minutes. It is especially helpful before bed for insomnia.
The Electro Reflex Energizer has 2 componants. The first is working directly on the feet . The electrical stimulation to all the reflexes on the feet at once is an incredible experience. The unite warms up a bit, and its speed and intensity is adjustable. The other componant is using pads on various parts of the body, usually the upper back, to bring about a stimulating massage at various intensity to the entire body. Truly an awesome experience, with incredible stress relieving results. The advantage of having these machines, is that even though many Reflexologists and Chiropractors use them in conjunction with their treatments, now you can have the benefits of reflexology and massage in the privacy of your home, ON A DAILY BASIS .
