As those who work with the circulation of the chi in the body, it is important to understand some of the principles that have been utilized in the martial arts techniques that also work with this primary life force. This month, I would like to focus on the five major principles of tai chi practice, one of the most powerful expressions of chi circulation, and how they relate to business. The first principle is to relax. Although many of the moves in the discipline require difficult positions of balance, they can be best achieved through relaxation. This is one of the essential ideas in building our business as well. It is very easy to become tense when things aren't going exactly the way you want them to. You stop breathing, hunch up your shoulders, and stop the circulation of the chi in its tracks. This will, in no way, be useful to what you wish to create in your life, or the lives of your distributors. When difficulties arise, step back, take a deep breath, and relax. You will then give yourself more space to solve whatever the difficulty is that has arisen. The second principle is to keep the spine straight, or upright. How this translates to business is to operate only from a position of integrity in all of our dealings. I have seen many people in various network marketing businesses take short cuts, making pie-in-the-sky promises to people about both health concerns as well as business success. This can only give your business, and network marketing in general a bad name. Be honest in all of your dealings. Speak about your personal experience, and support your distributors in a forthright manner. Don't make promises that may not come true, but rather under-promise and over-deliver on service. The third principle is the separation of empty from full. In this understanding, we deal with the notion of yin and yang, of active and receptive. In the martial arts form, the legs and arms go from positions of being weighted to having no weight on them whatsoever. the same must be true in our business. We must know when it is important to apply pressure or effort, but we must also know when to back off. We must be able to inspire our distributors without being over-bearing, and we must be able to create sales without creating ill will with those to who we would sell. This requires constant observation of how our actions are affecting others, as well as an awareness of how we would want to be treated in that situation. The more we practice, the more skillful we become. The fourth principle is to lead from the center. The point in tai chi is called the dan tien, the place where the chi gathers. It is located slightly below the navel. This is the place from which the chi will emanate when the Chi Machine® shuts off. This teaches us to take all of our actions from our place of power. In order to do this successfully, we need to amass this power for ourselves and our groups. This comes from study of information about the products and marketing plan, from our own experience of the products and the experience of others, and from learning from our upline how to build our business successfully. The more power we generate, the greater our success will be. The more power we generate, the more we can spread it to others, who then can duplicate our success. The final principle is called "beautiful lady's hands". In the tai chi form, this means that the hands are always in a position of elegance and beauty, relaxed yet strong. In our businesses, we will be well served by creating elegant means of communicating with others. What are your communications like to your Distributors? Are they overpowering, or are they inspiring? Does the beauty of the words match the beauty of the products? Are your people being empowered to be the best leaders they can be? The more elegance we can bring to our businesses, the more people will want to participate, because people are always attracted to beauty in all its forms.
